The Red Raiders are eliminated in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Championships.
ATHENS, Ga. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team had its season come to a close during Friday's Round of 16 at the 2017 NCAA Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus.
Jolan Cailleau nearly collected his third three-set victory in as many days, but he was handed a hard-fought 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 defeat by Wake Forest's Skander Mansouri.
Cailleau found his groove in the second set and earned the go-ahead break in the fifth game to grab a 3-2 advantage. He closed out the frame in-style with another break courtesy of crosscourt backhand from the baseline on a deuce point.
Cailleau staved off a trio of break points during the opening game of set three. However, Mansouri was able to convert on a service break to take a 3-2 lead. In the next game, Cailleau had an opportunity to get back on-serve and took a 30-15 edge. Mansouri was able to answer and reeled off three straight points for the hold. He held two more times to finish the match.
Cailleau, a two-time All-Big 12 selection in singles, finished his career with 88 singles victories. He also was named the ITA Texas Region Most Improved Senior Player and was the fourth player in program history to garner ITA All-American status in singles during the 2017 season.
"Our guys didn't quite have enough today," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "I thought they played well, and I'm very proud of their efforts. A great career for Jolan and a great way to finish it at Texas Tech becoming an All-American yesterday. For Bjorn and Connor, we have a bright future with them. Hopefully, they'll be able to learn from this week and use it as a springboard to get themselves even better for next season."
In doubles, Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson won the first two games of the opening set against second-seed and third-ranked Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu of UCLA. The Bruins strung together six of the next seven games to tuck way a 6-3 decision.
Down a break at 4-3 in set two, Curry and Thomson had a chance to even the tally. UCLA wiggled its way out of 40-0 hole to secure the hold and broke in the next game to close out the straight-set win.
