Ilgiz Valiev picked up a straight-set victory Monday in Texas Tech’s 6-1 loss to Florida State
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 24 Texas Tech men's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2018 season Monday afternoon as the Red Raiders fell to No. 21 Florida State, 6-1, at the Hawaii Tennis Complex.
"We fought hard and were in a ton of matches," Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "We didn't play clean enough to get the win. It's early in the year, and it was good to see what we need to improve on to compete with teams like Florida State. They played a solid match."
The Red Raiders' lone point came from Ilgiz Valiev in the No. 4 singles position as he defeated Jose Garcia in straight sets, 7-6 (0-4), 6-4. His victory pulled Tech to a 3-1 deficit before Florida State (3-0) locked up its third win of the season with a three-set victory by Aziz Dougaz in the top singles position.
Alex Sendegeya forced Dougaz to a third set after a 6-4 victory in the opening set. Dougaz bounced back, however, with a 6-3 win in the second and a 6-1 win to secure the match. Tech dropped three of its five singles losses in third sets.
The Seminoles started the match with a close win in doubles to secure the opening route. The No. 8 tandem of Garcia and Lucas Poullain held off the No. 29 duo of Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya, 7-5, to secure the doubles point as Tech was tied with Florida State on the nearby No. 2 court.
The Red Raiders will close their week long stay on Oahu Wednesday evening when Tech faces Hawaii for the second time this week alone. Tech previously topped Hawaii, 5-2, to open its spring slate Sunday afternoon. First serve for Wednesday's match is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT.
