No. 30 Men's Tennis Dismisses Tulsa, 5-2
April 11, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders have defeated Tulsa during each of the last three seasons.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 30 Texas Tech men's tennis team returned to the win column with a 5-2 victory over Tulsa on Wednesday at the McLeod Tennis Center.

The Red Raiders (18-7) remained undefeated at home with their 11th consecutive win this season and have knocked off Tulsa (10-16) during each of the last three seasons.

"I think we played pretty solid in doubles," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Tulsa is a streaky team so it's a little tricky. There are some short points. It's kind of hard to build a rhythm, but we told the guys to 'make sure that you're ready for the moment that some of those balls do go in and play smart.' That's something that we've talked about the last few days is playing a little bit smarter tennis and more consistent tennis. I saw that today."

Texas Tech started fast with the first four points of the match which included the doubles point with victories on courts one and two.

The Red Raiders got going behind Connor Curry and Ilgiz Valiev who fired out to a 3-0 advantage and didn't look back in a 6-3 win over Lucca Baptista and Majed Kilani in the No. 2 position.

After 11 consecutive service holds to start the match, Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya captured a break to avoid a tiebreaker with a 7-5 victory over Joshua Goodger and Jarod Hing at the top of the lineup. Sendegeya ripped a backhand winner up the line at deuce on match point.

When doubles play was stopped, Tommy Mylnikov and Matheus Leite were all square at 5-5 against Louis Corker and Mitchell Pritchard.

Curry kept the momentum with the Red Raiders to start singles action and registered a 6-3, 6-3 win over Hing at the No. 3 slot.

Artem Kapshuk extended the Texas Tech lead to 3-0 and snapped a five-match losing streak with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Pritchard on court five.

Valiev clinched the fourth point for the Red Raiders and earned a comeback 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Baptista in the No. 4 spot. He won the last four games of the winner-take-all third set and claimed his first break with a crosscourt forehand winner on a deuce point.

Leite ripped off seven of the last eight games to tuck away a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Boriss Kamdem at the bottom of the lineup.

The Golden Hurricane secured their two points from courts one and two. No. 114 Kilani edged out Sendegeya by a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-3) score line whereas No. 102 Goodger notched a 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 decision over Mylnikov.

"Honestly, I just want to see growth (heading into the Baylor match)," Masi said. "I want to see maturity in the sense of getting better at the things we need to get better at and not making the same mistakes. At the end if we go out there and do that and we lose I can live with that. If we go out there and we win, that's just icing on the cake. I really want to see us grow from what happened last weekend, see how we can perform and see how we're playing on the road because from here on out that's what were probably going to have to do. Baylor is never easy, and we've had some recent success there so hopefully we can continue with that."

Texas Tech will travel to No. 24 Baylor for its last regular season road match on Saturday. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. CT from Waco. Live stats and live video will be available courtesy of www.BaylorBears.com.
