April 10, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders play host to Tulsa on Wednesday followed by a road trip to No. 24 Baylor on Saturday.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 30 Texas Tech men's tennis team will look to regroup versus Tulsa and No. 24 Baylor this week following a pair of defeats on Big 12 opening weekend.
First serve for Wednesday's home match against the Golden Hurricane is set for 5 p.m. CT, while Saturday's road matchup versus the Bears will start at 6 p.m. CT. Admission is free to all home matches at the McLeod Tennis Center. Live updates for both matches can be found courtesy of @TexasTechTennis on Twitter.
"It definitely wasn't the outcome we wanted up in Norman and Stillwater last weekend, but hopefully our guys can be a little resilient here and get the bad taste out of our mouth with a home win tomorrow night," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Hopefully, we can bounce back and play the solid tennis that we are accustom to playing."
The Red Raiders (17-7, 0-2 Big 12) have won all 10 of their home matches highlighted by victories over Indiana and Northwestern from the Big 10 Conference. Texas Tech have been handed six of its seven losses by Top 25 opponents on the season.
The Red Raiders hold a 12-8 series advantage over Tulsa and have won the last two meetings during the last two seasons. Texas Tech also has put together a five-match winning streak over Baylor with all five victories coming by a 4-3 score line under Masi.
Tommy Mylnikov, Alex Sendegeya and Connor Curry have anchored the top three positions in the singles lineup. Mylnikov checks in at No. 120 in this week's ITA singles rankings, while Sendegeya brings a five-match winning streak into this week's action. Sendegeya was ahead in both of his matches before play was stopped over the weekend.
The Red Raiders are led by Ilgiz Valiev, Artem Kapshuk and Matheus Leite in the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles slots. Valiev has garnered a team-leading 15 dual match singles wins sparked by nine victories from court four.
Texas Tech has notched the doubles point in 17 of 24 matches. Leite and Mylnikov dialed up five consecutive games to claim a 6-4 win and the opening point of the OU match last Sunday.
The Golden Hurricane (10-13) have lost five straight all top ITA Top 40 opponents and a pair of Big 12 schools in Baylor and Texas. Tulsa has two singles players ranked in Joshua Goodger and Majed Kilani at No. 102 and No. 114, respectively.
Baylor (17-6, 0-2 Big 12) came away winless at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State on Big 12 opening weekend. The Bears have been solid at home and posted an unblemished 13-0 mark. BU has two singles players among the ITA's Top 70 in Johannes Schretter at No. 65 and Bjoern Peterson at No. 69. Schretter is joined by Will Little at No. 9 in the doubles rankings.
"I think that a little bit of anxiety should be on both team's minds thinking of the possibility of dropping to 0-3 in conference," Masi said of Saturday's Baylor match. "I would like to think we might be playing a little desperate. Hopefully, that desperation comes with some confidence. Having the Tulsa match in the middle of the week might help us with getting that anxiety off our backs from last weekend. I just hope that the guys can go out and learn from what happened and perform the right way. We've had some good success against Baylor the last couple of seasons. Maybe we can keep building on that even though it'll be tough. Playing at Baylor is not easy. "
