April 18, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders welcome No. 15 Texas and No. 6 TCU to the McLeod Tennis Center this week.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 32 Texas Tech men's tennis team will close the regular season with its most difficult home matches of the season when No. 15 Texas and No. 6 TCU visit the McLeod Tennis Center.
First serve for Thursday's matchup versus the Longhorns has been moved to for 3:30 p.m. CT due to forecasted high winds, while Sunday's meeting against the Horned Frogs is set for a 2 p.m. CT. Admission is free to all home matches at the McLeod Tennis Center. Live updates for both matches are available courtesy of @TexasTechTennis on Twitter.
"Every Big 12 match is important especially at home," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Those matches are like gold because you don't get too many of them. You want to use them to your advantage. We're undefeated so far at home this season. I don't if we played the caliber of teams like a Texas or TCU to this point at home. Hopefully, our guys can come out and have great performances."
Texas Tech (18-8, 0-3 Big 12) will honor seniors Connor Curry and Alex Sendegeya prior to Sunday's regular season home finale. The Red Raiders have registered 12 straight home wins dating back to last season and have won both of their Senior Day matches under Brett Masi.
The last time Texas Tech defeated both Texas and TCU was during the 2016 regular season. The Red Raiders have been handed seven of their eight losses by Top 25 competition this season.
Curry and Sendegeya have combined for 157 singles victories and both rank individually inside the Top 15 in program history. The duo also has teamed to rack up 139 doubles wins with both marks among the program's Top 6.
"A lot of wins and a lot of success for Alex and Connor during their careers," Masi said. "Great tennis players with good character. Big 12 title (in 2016) which has never been done before at Texas Tech. They're great guys who have represented the program well. They really embrace is the fact that they love Texas Tech. It means a lot to them playing for this team and for the university. I hope we can finish off their senior year well and build some momentum this weekend to take into the Big 12 and the NCAA Tournaments during the coming weeks. You can't ask for anything more than that."
Tommy Mylnikov holds a No. 124 ranking this week and has made 13 of 15 appearances at the top of the singles lineup.
Ilgiz Valiev, Artem Kapshuk and Jackson Cobb held down the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions during the Baylor match last Saturday. Cobb has posted a 6-4 mark during the spring campaign.
Texas Tech has picked up the doubles point in 18 of 26 matches but has posted a 2-4 doubles mark in Big 12 action. Mylnikov and Matheus Leite have split their two Big 12 decisions on court three.
The Longhorns (14-5, 2-1 Big 12) protected their home court with a pair of sweeps over the Oklahoma schools last weekend. Texas has four singles players ranked in the ITA's Top 100 headed by Yuya Ito at No. 49 and Harrison Scott at No. 74. The Longhorns top doubles tandem of Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles checks in at No. 8.
TCU (16-3, 3-0 Big 12), the two-time defending Big 12 regular season and tournament champions, have ripped off a 10-match winning streak. The Horned Frogs last setback came at then No. 9 Illinois on March 2. TCU also has a quartet of singles players ranked among the ITA's Top 100 led by Alex Rybakov at No. 19 and Alastair Gray at No. 57. In doubles, Rybakov and Guillermo Nunez hold the No. 5 spot.
