Red Raiders Sweep Doubleheader to Begin Season at 2-0
January 11, 2019 | Men's Tennis
The men’s tennis team won both of their matches on Friday against Bryant and Tulsa
TULSA, Okla. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team defeated both Bryant University and the University of Tulsa on Friday to move to 2-0 on the young 2019 season.
Tech opened their season with a win for the fourth year in a row, all of which have come under head coach Brett Masi.
"What an exciting day for us," Masi said. "To start off slowly like we did in doubles this morning and then turn it around in singles was big for us. On the flip side, I don't think I've ever seen a comeback like ours after falling down in the first six sets this evening. I'm ecstatic for those seniors in Artem (Kapshuk) and Tommy (Mylnikov) to help lead that charge and for Franco (Ribero) to get his feet wet and get those wins."
In the first match of the day, the Red Raiders failed to secure a victory in doubles play, as the initial point was taken by Bryant after two games.
Tech put together a furious rally in singles play, led by the two newcomers, Lorenzo Battista and Franco Ribero, who played in their first ever collegiate competition on Friday. Both Battista and Ribero won their matches in straight sets.
Tech also picked up a point from the return of talented junior Bjorn Thomson, who successfully competed in his first spring event since 2017 after missing the 2018 spring session with a wrist injury. Those three points, combined with a hearty 6-4, 6-3 win by sophomore Ilgiz Valiev and a 6-3, 7-5 victory by senior Artem Kapshuk, propelled the Red Raiders to a 5-2 win, and a 1-0 start in 2019.
In the second match of the day, Tech found their stride in doubles play, as they captured their first opening point of the season by winning … matches out of three. The experienced duo of Thomson and Parker Wynn, who made his spring debut for the Red Raiders on Friday, secured the first win by defeating their opponents by a count of 6-2. The point-clinching victory came from another seasoned tandem in Jackson Cobb and Tommy Mylnikov, who played in several tournaments together during the fall campaign.
"It didn't take long for our guys to get tested and I think we responded pretty well overall," assistant coach Daniel Whitehead said. "We have plenty to work on this next week but these guys will continue working hard. Great play from Franco during his first day of college tennis. To be put in a 3-3 situation and finish as strong as he did, that was great to see."
In the second singles session of the day, the Red Raiders picked up three points, beginning with a hard fought 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win for Mylnikov. The next point would be taken in yet another three set affair, this time by Kapshuk, who won both of his singles matches. The final and match-clinching point would come from Ribero, who starts his Red Raider career at 2-0 in singles play.
The Red Raiders will return home for the first time since the spring of 2018, as they host Lamar University and the University of New Mexico in a doubleheader matchup on Sunday, Jan. 20.
