LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis program received National Letters of Intent from Isaac Arevalo and Connor Johnson to join the team in January, announced Wednesday by head coach Daniel Whitehead.
Arevalo and Johnson will both join the program in the spring. Arevalo will begin his Red Raider career as a sophomore following his transfer from Utah State and Johnson will start as a freshman.
"We're excited to bring in both Isaac and Connor," Whitehead said. "Both guys have the ability to make an impact in the lineup right away and are great additions to our team culture overall. I know they're eager to get here and get to work and they will be exciting to watch this spring."
In his freshman year in Logan, Arevalo became the highest ranked Aggie singles player in program history, climbing as high as No. 111 in the spring of 2019. Arevalo was named as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Region Rookie of the Year and earned all-Mountain West singles honors to complement his Mountain West Freshman of the Year award, also a program first. He also made the academic all-Mountain West list in 2019.
Arevalo notched a 19-16 singles record in his inaugural campaign, including a win over then-No. 25 Joseph Guillin of UCSB, the highest-ranked win in Utah State history. He also captured the 2018 Midland Invitational crown and began his fall campaign with a 5-0 record.
Prior to his collegiate career, Arevalo had a Universal Tennis Ranking of 13.13 and an ITF ranking of 196. He was the No.2-ranked player in Mexico and winner of the El Savador ITF championship and the ITF Cuba championship.
Johnson, a native of Syndey, Australia, joins the Red Raider tennis team with a wealth of international experience, reaching a career high of No. 826 in the ITF rankings.
Johnson most recently picked up a win at the ITA World Tennis Tour M15 tournament in Austin against Lazar Markovic of the United States. He qualified for the main draw of the M25 Cairns in Australia with three-straight wins, including a pair of top-2000 ITF World Tennis Singles players.
The Red Raiders will return to action to begin their spring semester in Iowa City as they take on the Iowa Hawkeyes on Jan. 16 before returning to the McLeod Tennis Center on Jan. 20.
