RECAP: No. 11 Kansas 79, No. 16 Texas Tech 63

LAWRENCE, Kansas – Texas Tech trailed by 20 at halftime against No. 11 Kansas and could never get a comeback going as the No. 16 Red Raiders took a 79-63 loss at the midpoint of their Big 12 Conference schedule on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.
Texas Tech (17-5, 5-4 Big 12) had a two-game winning streak end, while the Jayhawks (17-5, 6-3 Big 12) snapped a two-game skid after hitting a season-high 13 3-pointers against the Red Raiders. TTU was limited to 34.4 percent shooting, including going 6-for-28 on 3-pointers while Kansas made nine first-half 3-pointers and shot 45.8 percent from the field. Tariq Owens led Tech with his second double-double of the season after going for 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Davide Moretti had three 3-pointers for the third straight game and led the team with 14 points. Jarrett Culver would add 10 points and six rebounds and Matt Mooney finished with 11 points. Owens added three blocked shots in the game and now has 54 for the season.
Dedric Lawson and Ochai Agbaji both recorded double-doubles for the Jayhawks with Lawson going for 25 points and 10 rebounds and Agbaji contributing 10 points and 10 rebounds. Three KU players made three 3-pointers each with Lawson at 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, Legerald Vick going 3-for-4 and Devon Dotson making 3 of 5. Dotson finished the game with a career-high 20 points and Vick had 13 points and six rebounds for the Jayhawks who led throughout and by as many as 24. Lawson now has 15 double-doubles this season for the Jayhawks who had 19 assists on their 27 baskets.
Texas Tech will return to action on ESPN's Big Monday against West Virginia at 8 p.m. at the United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders earned a 62-59 win over the Mountaineers on Jan. 2 in Morgantown, West Virginia in their Big 12 opener with Culver leading the team with 18 points and six rebounds, while Mooney added 14 and Moretti had 12 in the first-ever win for Tech at WVU. It is the second straight week where TTU will host ESPN Big Monday after not appearing on that national platform since 2006 before last week's win over TCU. West Virginia (10-12, 2-7 Big 12) is coming off a 79-71 win over Oklahoma on Saturday that snapped a three-game losing streak.
The Red Raiders were never able to cut the 20-point halftime deficit against KU lower than when Moretti hit a 3-pointer to make it 59-46 with 11 minutes to play before the Jayhawks went on a 7-2 run and led 66-48 with eight minutes on the clock. The Red Raiders were 0-for-2 on 3-pointers, while KU was 3-for-3 from the field with one 3-pointer during the run that took it from a 13-point hole back to 18. Texas Tech finished the game with a 42-39 advantage on the boards but could never overcome the 3-point shooting of the Jayhawks. Tech also was 13 of 22 at the free-throw line (59.1 percent) in the game where they were 34.4 percent from the field and 21.4 percent from beyond the arc.
Texas Tech, which fell to 12-19 in ranked vs. ranked matchups, trailed 46-26 at halftime after seeing the Jayhawks go 9-for-15 on 3-poiters and the Red Raiders being held to 10-for-33 (30.3 percent) shooting from the field. Tech had only two turnovers but were being outrebounded by a 22-14 margin as they went to the locker room trailing for the 10th time this season. Culver was leading the Red Raiders with eight points, but was only 4-for-11 to start the game including going 0-for-4 on 3-pointers. Mooney and Moretti each had seven points and Owens was at four points as the teams went into the locker room. KU was on a 10-2 run to start the game with the Red Raiders at 1-for-7 shooting, including going 0-for-3 on 3-pointers in the first five minutes of the game.
Lawson led KU with 16 points at halftime, including going 3-for-3 on 3-pointers and Vick had 11 after he also went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc to start the game. The Jayhawks were shooting 16-for-29 (55.2 percent) from the field and were 5-for-6 at the free-throw line as they built the 20-point advantage.
Texas Tech and Kansas will matchup again Saturday, Feb. 23 at the United Supermarkets Arena. The Jayhawks will go into that game with a 35-5 all-time advantage in the series, including an 18-1 record in Lawrence after their win on Saturday.
