Texas Tech Shootout Set for Friday
February 07, 2019 | Track and Field
Red Raiders welcoming four Big 12 programs, several non-conference squads to fifth meet.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Red Raiders are prepping for their fifth meet of the indoor campaign as the Texas Tech Shootout approaches Friday. The Red Raiders will have over 80 student-athletes in action, and they will be going head-to-head with several Big 12 schools, including Texas, Oklahoma State, TCU and Kansas State. They will also be welcoming strong non-conference competition in Arizona, BYU, Wyoming and Penn.
Â
Texas Tech's men's squad was again ranked as the number one team in the nation Monday in the newest USTFCCCA rankings. The women's team dropped two slots from last week, but remains in the top-25 at number 20.
Â
The USTFCCCA's #EventSquad rankings, which rate the best programs in the country by event, has Tech's men's team as the top school in the country for the 200m, long jump and triple jump. All four of Tech's ranked 200m runners will compete at the Texas Tech Shootout, but it will just be two – Derrius Rodgers and Jacolby Shelton – that will run the 200m. Divine Oduduru, the second-rated 200m runner at Tech, will go in the 60m and 4x400. Andrew Hudson, Tech's leading 200m runner and owner of the fastest time in the world, will only run the 4x400.
Â
Both of the Red Raiders' top-rated jumpers, Odaine Lewis and Charles Brown, will each be competing in both the long jump and triple jump. Lewis and Brown hold the fourth and fifth national spots in the long jump, respectively. Lewis also ranks fourth in the triple jump, while Brown sits in 10th.
Â
Tech's women's team also stands as the top long jump program in the country, making Tech the only school to be ranked the top in one event on both the men's and women's side. Maya Evans and Talajah Murrell – rated third and fourth on the squad, respectively – will be the only two to go in the long jump this weekend. Ivy Walker, who leads the team, will be running in the 60m hurdles, while second-ranked Chinne Okoronkwo will be pole vaulting and triple jumping. Â
Â
Highly-touted multis athlete Axel Hubert will compete in his first set of combined events as a Red Raider over the course of Friday and Saturday. Hubert, who arrived in Lubbock from France after winter break, began his collegiate career with a personal record in the 60m hurdles as well as a solid showing in the high jump at last weekend's Texas Tech Open. This weekend, he will compete in the full heptathlon, which begins at noon on Friday and carries into Saturday morning.
Â
For the first time this season, Tech will have runners competing away from Lubbock. Distance runners Jonah Koech and Nokuthula Dlamini will head to Washington for the Husky Classic – a historically strong meet for distance events. Koech, a three-time All-American in the indoor mile while at UTEP, will run it on Saturday. Dlamini will go in the 3000m on Friday. Â
Â
The Texas Tech Shootout will begin Friday at 4 p.m. with the weight throw. Track events will get underway at 5 p.m. with the 800m. Tickets may be purchased here.
