Red Raiders Fall to No. 33 UCF, 4-3
March 06, 2020 | Men's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 20-ranked Texas Tech men's tennis team fell to No. 33 UCF, 4-3, on Friday night at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders moved to 12-5 on the year and 6-1 in Lubbock with Friday's loss.
"It was a really good college tennis match against a very good team," head coach Daniel Whitehead said. "We played well. We turned it around after a slow start in doubles and I'm proud of how we fought. It was an unfortunate way to end the match, but we fought hard and we'll need to continue fighting in the coming weeks."
After dropping the first doubles match on court one, Tech stormed back from early deficits on courts two and three to secure the doubles point. Reed Collier and Parker Wynn improved to 6-1 in 2020 with a 7-5 win and Bjorn Thomson and Ilgiz Valiev notched their seventh victory with a 7-6(7) triumph to clinch the first point of the match.
The Red Raiders maintained their early momentum in singles action by taking four of six first sets.
Thomson advanced to 9-3 in his senior season with a 6-1, 7-5 victory on court six for his third-consecutive win and the second match point of the night for the Red Raiders.
Wynn, who entered Friday's match ranked No. 48, got his fifth ranked win this year with a 6-1, 7-6(3) victory over No. 19 Gabriel Decamps of the Golden Knights on court one. Wynn has seven wins this season and is 6-3 in his last 10 matches.
The next three match points would be taken by the Golden Knights on courts five, three and four to tie the match at three.
In a battle of top-100 opponents, No. 87 Valiev fought back from a 3-6 first-set deficit to No. 76 Juan Pablo Mazzuchi of UCF to take the second 6-4. The third set came down to the wire in a seventh-point tiebreaker in which Mazzuchi pulled away early to take the math for the Golden Knights at 7-6(2).
