Cobb, Thomson to Conclude Careers at Texas Tech
June 26, 2020 | Men's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior men's tennis players Jackson Cobb and Bjorn Thomson have announced their intention to forego the extra year of eligibility they were granted following the shortened 2020 season.
The pair made their mark on the program with a combined 73 singles wins and three NCAA Tournament berths during their time in Lubbock.
Cobb's career comes to an end with 26 victories on the singles side and 60 in doubles action across all competitions. He was a participant in the 2017 ITA All-America Doubles Championships and reached a ranking of No. 29 with playing partner Alex Sendegeya. Cobb's 14 wins at the No. 2 doubles slot in dual match play currently ranks as the ninth-most in program history.
His success extended off the court as well, where he notched a trio of Academic All-Conference nods, including a first team selection in 2020. He was also named to the second team in 2019 and the rookie squad in 2017.
"As I look at his career, he represents somebody on your team that has all the traits you want your other athletes to follow," head coach Daniel Whitehead said. "He wasn't the most highly recruited kid out of high school, but he was a fearless leader and one of the best doubles competitors in the conference. You could turn to him in any match and he would give you a chance to win in big moments and that's a because of his passion for the team and his fighting spirit. We're going to miss having him in the locker room. We truly appreciate everything he's done for this team and I know he's going to do great things moving forward."
Thomson departs Lubbock with 134 wins across singles and doubles play, including the all-time program mark for doubles victories with 88 over his career. His singles mark of 22-4 (.846) in the 2016 season is the second-highest tally in Tech history and his 32 wins on the doubles side in 2018 is the most in a single campaign by a Red Raider.
Thomson's list of recognitions includes ITA All-America honors with playing partner Parker Wynn for their efforts in the 2018-19 campaign, which was highlighted by a runner-up finish at the ITA Fall National Championships. He was a two-time All-Big 12 first team honoree for doubles in both 2017 and 2019. Thomson earned NCAA Doubles Championships twice in his career and advanced to the round of 16 with partner Connor Curry in 2017.
Academic accomplishments were no stranger to Thomson as well, as he became the fourth Red Raider to be named as a CoSIDA Academic All-American for the 2019-20 academic year. He has also been named an ITA scholar athlete and Academic All-Big 12 honoree on three occasions.
Thomson was also unanimously appointed Big 12 SAAC chair position by his conference peers in 2018, where he led fellow conference student-athletes from each institution to organize and let their voices be heard through feedback on local and national athletic legislation.
"All of the records and on courts achievements he's accomplished are undeniable," Whitehead said. "It's a testament to who he is as a person and his passion for Texas Tech and his teammates around him. He's one of the best leaders I've ever been around. He's certainly made his mark on this team and this program and it's impressive how much he's achieved. He's overcome adversity and injuries during his time and taken on leadership opportunities off the court. I'm very proud of him."
Both Cobb and Thomson recently graduated in May with bachelor's degrees in mechanical engineering and sport management, respectively.
