Sofia Garcia claimed her fifth individual title Wednesday as the only competitor to finish under par
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf team claimed its first tournament title of the 2020-21 season Wednesday at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational as Sofia Garcia collected her fifth career individual title.
Â
The tournament title marked the first for the Red Raiders since the 2019 spring slate at the Valspar August Invitational. It was the 14th team title under JoJo Robertson, the most for a head coach in program history.
Â
After entering Wednesdays final round four strokes back of host and leader UTSA, the Red Raiders managed a 16-stroke difference over the Roadrunners through the final 18 holes, firing a 1-over-par 289 to claim the tournament title by 12 strokes.
Â
Garcia notched her fifth individual title after a tournament low 3-under 69 in the final round as she combined to shot 5-under for the 54-hole-event, finishing 10 strokes better than her closest competitor. Garcia, who already owned the school record for most career individual titles, was the only competitor in the eight-team field to finish under par.
Â
Cecilie Nielsen added the highest individual finish of her career in a tie for second after carding her lowest round of the tournament at even-par 72, wrapping the event at 5-over-par.
Â
Anna Dong concluded play in a tie for 11th, finishing at 10-over for the tournament, while Gala Dumez and Amy Taylor rounded out Tech's lineup in a tie for 22nd and 24th, respectively, following 5-over and 3-over final rounds. Dumez was 17-over for the tournament, one stroke better than Taylor as the entire Tech lineup ranked among the top-25 individuals.
Â
Louisa Brunt, meanwhile, notched her best finish of the season as an individual, placing in a tie for sixth at 8-over for the tournament. Brunt now has five top-10 finishes in her career. Valentina Gilly and Pyrene Delample also competed as individuals, concluding the event in 38th and 43rd place, respectively.
Â
Tech will take less than a week off before heading out of state to compete in the BYU Spring Classic hosted at the Sand Hollow Golf Course in Hurricane, Utah, beginning Monday.Â
