LUBBOCK, Texas –Texas Tech men's tennis head coach Daniel Whitehead has announced the addition of Jonas Gundacker to the 2023 signing class.
"What excited me about Jonas was his complete game," Whitehead said. "He competes really well and has more than one way to beat players. I really enjoyed getting to know him and his family, and I liked seeing his strong passion and love for the game of tennis. He is coming in with a high-level of commitment."
Gundacker, who is joining the Red Raiders next fall, trains at TAF Academy is his hometown of Amstetten, Austria where he is coached by Helmut Fellner.
Back in September, Gundacker won the General Individual District West Championships in his home country, only dropping one set in the entire tournament. He first posted a second-round win over Jurgen Florian, 6-0, 6-0, then advanced to the semifinals on a walkover.
There, Gundacker defeated Stefan Auinger by two scores of 7-5, before winning the tournament with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 score against Gregor Hausberger.
Gundacker also competed at the Tragwein Open this year, where he was a singles finalist in the tournament. In the first round, Gundacker defeated Manuel Ali, 6-2, 6-2, before beating Johannes Prammer in the follow round by a 6-2, 7-5 score. He picked up another straight-set victory against Maximilian Schmaranzer, 6-3, 6-0, before making the finals with a win over David Tomic.
In 2022, Gundacker has accumulated an impressive 39-8 singles record and has won 4 tournaments, including the Neulengbach Tennis Trophy tournament where he defeated Mississippi State graduate, Gregor Ramskogler, in the finals, 7-6, 6-4.
Gundacker has an ITF doubles title under his belt after winning the J5 Slovenska Lupca tournament with partner, Michael Felix Frank, back in 2019. The duo first defeated Pavel Kelo and Norbert Marosik, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (8), before downing Peter Kucera and Stanislav Valent in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-2. In the semifinals, the pair beat Milos Karol and Simon Sedliak, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5), before winning the doubles title with a victory against Tomas Lanik and Michal Novansky, 6-3, 7-5.
At J2 Villach, Gundacker put together solid singles play to advance out of qualifying and into the main draw. He was able to beat Emil Pristauz, Matic Dimic and the current No. 121-ranked Florida Gator, Abedallah Shelbayh, to reach the main draw of the tournament.
In addition, Gundacker made two more singles main draw quarterfinals appearances at both the J4 Wels and J5 Rhodes tournaments in 2019.
"I think he will be a great fit with our program, and I am excited about what he will do in the next four years here," Whitehead added.
