Tech rebounded Friday night to defeat NM State
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech men's tennis split a doubleheader Friday falling to Louisiana 4-1 before rebounding to roll past New Mexico State 6-1 at the windy McLeod Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (5-4) returned home for the first time since Jan. 13.
MATCH ONE: Louisiana 4, Texas Tech 1:
Battling both the windy conditions and the Ragin' Cajuns (6-1), Tech dropped a hard-fought doubles point as Isaac Arevalo and Reed Collier fell in a tiebreaker (7-4). The setback clinched the doubles
point for ULL.
In singles action, Arevalo raced out to a 6-1 opening set victory before dropping a tough second set 6-4. The match remained unfinished.
Other highlights include Franco Ribero earning a straight set (6-3, 6-3) victory on court four.
MATCH TWO: Texas Tech 6, NM State 1:
In the nightcap the Red Raiders rebounded to defeat New Mexico State, 6-1.
The match got off to a strong start as Arevalo and Piotr Pawlak rolled past NM State's Gijs Akkermans and Corey Clarke, 6-0. Tech clinched the doubles point when Francisco Vittar and Olle Wallin cruised to a 6-2 victory.
In singles action, the Raiders rolled to five straight set victories.
Playing on court four, Ribero improved to 2-0 in singles play for the day, dropping just three games in his victory.
Other strong performances included Pawlak earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory and Wallin winning a straight sets match over Corey Clarke.
The lone match Tech dropped was an epic third-set tiebreaker that saw Takeyasu Sekiguchi fall 10-6 to Akkermans of NM State.
HEAD COACH DANNY WHITEHEAD:
"We needed to respond in the second match after falling earlier in the day. Credit Louisiana. They came out and seemed to want the match more than we did. Ultimately, that's on me. After something like that happens you need to bounce back. And I feel like we did a much better job of responding and having the right attitude in the afternoon. I'm proud of the way our guys responded against New Mexico State."
