Texas Tech secured its 16th team title under head coach JoJo Robertson on Tuesday in Dallas
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 23 Texas Tech women's golf team secured its first team title of the season Tuesday as the Red Raiders fired an even-par final round to easily hang on to win the Trinity Forest Invitational held in Dallas.
The Red Raiders, who battled cold and windy conditions throughout the two-day, 54-hole tournament, were a combined 1-over-par as a team over their final two rounds, finishing at 22-over-par 886 overall, an impressive 14 strokes better than second place Tulsa. Only UTSA had a better final round team score than the Red Raiders as the Roadrunners edged Texas Tech by just a stroke en route to rounding out the top five in a tie for fourth overall.
The drastic turn from Monday's opening round propelled the Red Raiders to their first team title since claiming the Maryb A. Kauth Invitational and the BYU Spring Classic in consecutive weeks last spring. It marked the 16th team title under JoJo Robertson, easily the most by a head coach in program history.
Texas Tech, which entered the day with a 14-stroke advantage, rounded out the second round at 1-over 289 overall with Chiara Horder leading the way at 4-under 68. Horder added another under-par card later in the day, signing for a 1-under 71 thanks to a key birdie at the par-5 2nd, her final hole as part of the shotgun start format. Monday's second round was halted with a few holes remaining due to darkness.
Horder closed the tournament in a tie for fourth place overall alongside teammate Gala Dumez, who posted Texas Tech's best final round at 2-under 70. The duo was 2-over for the tournament, marking the highest finish in Horder's still young career and the team-leading fourth top-10 showing this year from Dumez.
Amy Taylor continued her strong play to start the spring with a 2-over round that pushed her into a tie for 18th overall at 11-over for the tournament. She was two strokes better than Libby Fleming, who was 1-over for the final 18 holes to finish in a tie for 29th individually. Cecilie Nielsen rounded out the lineup in 61st place at 22-over.
Outside of the team lineup, Anna Dong turned in a strong performance as an individual, closing the event in 17th place following an even-par 72 round that pushed her to 10-over for the tournament. Kylee Loewe also participated as an individual, combining to shoot 21-over to finish tied for 55th overall.
The tournament was Texas Tech's final event before its Spring Break trip to the Arizona desert for the Mountain View Collegiate. The three-day event will run March 18-20 in Tucson, Arizona, and will be the final tournament before the Red Raiders host their own match play challenge at The Rawls Course on April 3-4.
