The Red Raiders bow out of the Big 12 Championships
FORT WORTH – The Texas Tech men's tennis program fell 4-0 to the Oklahoma Sooners Friday afternoon at the 2022 Big 12 Championships hosted by TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (14-11) will now await their postseason fate, when the 2022 NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament field will be announced Monday, May 2.
Tech found itself in a battle early, as OU took the first doubles match 6-2. Dimitrios Azoidis and doubles partner Reed Collier quickly answered with a 6-4 victory on court three.
With the doubles portion deadlocked at one-all, all eyes turned to court one where Isaac Arevalo and freshman Piotr Pawlak were locked in battle with No. 68 Alex Martinez and Welsh Hotard. With the score tied at five-games-all, Arevalo and Pawlak were broken.
Needing to respond to extend the match, the duo quickly broke at love to force a tiebreaker.
In the breaker, Arevalo and Pawlak got off to strong 3-1 start, but Oklahoma won six of the final seven points to seal the doubles point.
Riding the momentum from singles play, the Sooners won five of six opening sets to grab control of the match. The lone opening set victory came on court six, when Pawlak raced out to a 6-3 victory. The freshman's match was unfinished.
OU doubled its lead rather quickly when Alex Martinez defeated Collier three and two.
Just moments later, Mark Mandlik answered with a 6-3, 6-4 victory on three. With the win, OU moved to within one point of the overall victory.
The Sooners ultimately finished off the 4-0 sweep when No. 40 Mason Beiler closed out a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 79 Arevalo.
