LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech track and field team will be scattered all over the country this weekend, highlighted by the second annual Jarvis Scott Open Friday through Saturday inside the Sports Performance Center.
Several members of the jumps squad will be in Albuquerque, N.M., for the Don Kirby Elite Invite while two distance runners (Edward Rush and Halena Rahmaan) travel to Nashville, Tenn., for the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt.
History of Jarvis Scott
Scott was born on April 6, 1947 in Waco, Texas before she moved with her family to Los Angeles at the age of nine. She started running at David Starr Jordan High School where she became the first female to compete in in track & field. By the age of 21, Scott had qualified for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in the 400m and 800m, becoming the first American to accomplish such feat. She would give up her spot in the 800m to her friend Francie Kraker in an act of solidarity as Scott would go on to place sixth in the 400m finals.
Scott started her coaching career in 1977 at Cal State Los Angeles – where she is now in its Athletics Hall of Fame – and made her way to Lubbock in 1979 as the first head coach for both the men's and women's cross country programs as well as the first women's track and field head coach. Scott held both of those roles up until her retirement in 1991. She remained heavily involved in the global track community and in Lubbock, before her passing on September 29, 2017. Her legacy lives on at Texas Tech from becoming the first African American head coach for any sport, to helping develop the cross country and women's track & field programs to what they are today.
Last Time Out
Zach Bradford and Caleb Dean put on a show at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, both securing top-2 national marks. Bradford became the first Red Raider to break the 19-foot barrier mark in the pole vault with a height of 5.83m (19-1 ½), a lifetime best mark. Meanwhile, Dean a dropped personal best (PB) time of 7.62 in the 60m hurdles which put him No. 2 all-time in the Tech record book.
Rankings
In the week three U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) rankings, the Texas Tech men fell one spot to No. 3, while the women slid to No. 15.
On the Lookout
Rush and Rahmaan will look to continue their roll in the Music City. Both are coming off PB times in the mile with Rush clocking in at 4:05.05 and Rahmaan at 4:55.89.
Albuquerque will see both multis from the men side travel in Denim Rogers and Cole Omlin. Rogers is ranked No. 10 right now in the heptathlon scoring 5,848 points (PB) nearly three weeks ago. Caleb Wilborn is hopeful to make his high jump debut Friday. His teammate, Omamuyovwi Erhire makes the trip as well, holding the No. 3 mark in the country at 2.23m (7- 3 ¾).
Triple jump will be well represented led by TTU season leaders, Chris Welch and Onaara Obamuwagun.
