LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders split their doubleheader on Friday after defeating the UTRGV Vaqueros in a sweep, 7-0, before falling in a hard-fought match to the New Mexico State Aggies, 4-2.
Starting off strong with doubles, the Red Raiders (3-3) battled the Vaqueros (0-5) by winning two out of the three matches. Dominating on court one was Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak after they took down the duo of Santiago Serrano and Loic Young, 6-1. On court two, the tandem of Tyler Stewert and Ludovico Vaccari clinched the doubles point against Paolo Bonaguro and Sam Whitehead. In that match, the Red Raiders went up 3-0 and kept the momentum to win it by a 6-2 score.
In singles, the Scarlet and Black started strong with a 2-0 lead thanks to Abboud at court six against Serrano. Abboud went down 0-3 in the first set, but made a fiery comeback after winning six of the next seven games to claim the set, 6-4. Abboud then never lost a game after that as he won the following set with a bagel, 6-0, to add to the lead. Â
Over at court one, Pawlak and Whitehead were battling it out. In the first set, Pawlak and Whitehead tied it at 1-all, before the Red Raider won five consecutive games to take it by a 6-1 score. The Vaquero pushed back in the second set, breaking Pawlak's serve three times before the Poland native fought back to win, 6-4, and give Tech a 3-0 advantage. Â
Clinching the match for the Red Raiders was Felipe Pagnacco at court five against Bonaguru. The Red Raider fell in set one, 4-6, before evening the match with a 6-0 second set. In the third and final set, Pagnacco took a 5-0 lead over Bonaguru before the Vaquero battled back to win the next couple games. However, the Red Raider held serve to close out the match with a 6-2 third set win. Â
Making it 5-0 in the Red Raiders' favor was Niksa Arsic at court two over Ivo Isqueiro. In the first set, both players traded games before Arsic went ahead 5-4 on a break, then served it out to claim set one, 6-4. Isqueiro made things difficult for the Red Raider in the following set as he forced a tiebreaker. In the breaker, UTRGV went out to a 6-2 lead before Arsic held off four set points to make it 6-all. Both went back-and-forth until Arsic came out on top with a 7-6 (8) score.
Freshman Thiago Guglieri added a point on the board for Tech when he took down Young at court four. In set one, Young led 6-5 before the Red Raider forced a tiebreak. The two traded points until Guglieri held and broke serve to win it by a 7-6 (5) score. The Vaquero was able to tie things up when he won set two, 6-2. Once again, both players tied at 3-all before Guglieri won the next three games for a 6-3 third set.
Giving the Red Raiders a clean sweep was Vaccari at court three against Will Roberts. Vaccari took a 4-2 lead in the first set before the Vaquero tied it up at 4-4. Vaccari answered with a break to make it 5-4, then held serve to claim set one by a 6-4 score. However, Roberts evened the match with a 6-2 second set win. In the third set, Roberts went out to a 5-2 lead, looking poised to win his match, but the Red Raider had other plans. Vaccari would win three-straight games to tie it at 5-all, before forcing a breaker at 6-6, where he overpowered the Vaquero, 7-6 (5).
In the second match of the day, New Mexico State (3-6) was able to take an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. The Aggies got their first win at court two when Tobias Wallin and Gustavo Campos defeated Guglieri and Vaccari, 6-4. The Red Raiders evened it up when Abboud and Pawlak posted a dominating win over Holland Snell and Matias Rojas at the top court. The Red Raiders and Aggies tied it up at 2-2, until Abboud and Pawlak won the next four games to claim the match, 6-2.
It all came down to court three as Arsic and Takeyasu Sekiguchi paired up to take on Roko Stipetic and Lance Urlaud. Both doubles teams went back-and-forth, tying at 5-all, before the Aggies held and broke serve to win it and the doubles point, 7-5.
The Red Raiders were able to tie the match at 1-1 when Arsic defeated Snell at court three. Arsic took a 4-2 lead, then won two of the next three games for a 6-3 first set. Then, the Serbia native did the same exact thing in the following set to win it by a 6-3 score and claim the match.
The Aggies took a 3-1 lead after winning matches at courts one and six. But, Tech put another point on the board thanks to a heroic effort from Guglieri at court four against Stipetic. In set one, both players traded games until Guglieri broke and held serve at 5-all to take it by a 7-5 score. The Aggie evened the match when he won the second set, 6-2. Guglieri had a 2-0 and 3-1 lead in the final set, until Stipetic won a game to make it 3-2. However, that would be the last game he won as Guglieri claimed the following four games to win it, 6-2.
The Aggies were able to clinch the match at court two after Wallin beat Stewart in three tough sets. In set one, Stewart went down 0-3 but came back to tie it at 5-5. The Aggie was able to win the next two games, though, for a 7-5 victory. Then, Stewart shifted the momentum in his favor as he won the next set by a 6-2 score. Wallin came back in the final set to clinch the match with a 6-2 win. At court five, Pagnacco and Rojas were locked in a battle as Pagnacco led 6-4, 5-7, 3-2 when the match went unfinished.
Up next, the Red Raiders head to Kansas to take on Wichita State on Friday, February 7 at 1 p.m.
