No. 17 Lady Raiders take on Mountaineers

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 17 Texas Tech Lady Raiders continue Big 12 play with a game against the West Virginia Mountaineers at 6 p.m. CT on Jan. 7 in Morgantown, W.Va. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series over Texas Tech, 19-6, as they've won 14 of the last 15 meetings. In the last contest, West Virginia won by an 89-53 score in Lubbock on Jan. 8, 2025.
With the win against the Arizona Wildcats last Saturday, the Lady Raiders achieved yet another milestone... Earning the best start in program history at 16-0 to begin the year. Tech's 3-0 start to Big 12 is also the best start to conference play since 2010-11. The 31-point win against Arizona (80-49) is also the best regular-season conference victory since the 87-41 defeat of Colorado on Jan. 15, 2005. Texas Tech is one of four undefeated teams left in the nation and only Big 12 team left.
Tech ranks 35th nationally in field goal percentage (.461). All but one Lady Raider in the normal 9-player rotation is shooting .400 or better in field goals on the season. Seven of those nine are also shooting .450 or above as Jada Malone leads the team with a 69 percent shooting clip. The Lady Raiders have outshot all of their opposition this season, posting higher field goal percentages in all 16 games so far. The team's season high field goal percentage was 54.2 percent (29-for-56) versus Texas State on Nov. 9, 2025.
In Tech's last game against Arizona, the Lady Raider bench outscored Arizona's bench 40-7. This marked Texas Tech's second game this year with 40+ bench points, as well as seventh game with 30+ bench points. The Lady Raiders are now 17th nationally and first in the Big 12 in bench points per game with 29.9. Snudda Collins leads the way off the bench with 230 bench points, followed by Malone with 132.
The Lady Raiders are one of the best teams in the country on defense. Tech is holding teams to 52.1 points per game, 31.9 percent from the field and 22.8 percent from behind the arc to rank third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in those categories nationally. The Lady Raiders' 5.6 blocks per game is good for 15th nationally, while they are forcing 20.56 turnovers per game to check in at 49th in the country and third in the Big 12.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The West Virginia Mountaineers are 13-2 on the season and 3-0 in the Big 12, the only other team to be undefeated in conference play other than the Lady Raiders. Receiving votes in both polls and currently boasting a No. 17 NET ranking, the Mountaineers have key wins over Duke, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, Kansas State and Kansas. Their two losses came against Ohio State and Villanova. Currently on a seven-game winning streak, West Virginia averages 80.7 points per game and holds opponents to just 56.3 points per game. Shooting 40.4 percent from the field and 34.2 percent from behind the arc, the Mountaineers also average 15.7 assists per game and 12.7 steals per game. There are four Mountaineers who average double-figure scoring on the season in Gia Cooke (16.5ppg), Sydney Shaw (13.5ppg), Kierra Wheeler (13.3ppg) and Jordan Harrison (11.4ppg). On the rebounding side, Wheeler leads the team with 7.3 per game followed by both Shaw and Carter Mccray with 4.9 each.
