The men's tennis team improved to 4-3 on the year with the victory
DALLAS, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team defeated the No. 14 ranked Texas A&M Aggies by a score of 4-3 at the SMU Tennis Center in Dallas, Texas on Friday.
Tech, who had previously dropped two straight matches against top-20 competition, defeated their first ranked opponent of the 2019 spring session with Friday's win.
"We preached starting early all week," head coach Brett Masi said. "We came out with a better tempo and urgency. We made some switches in doubles and grabbed an important point. In singles, instead of being down in break points like previous matches, it seemed like we were up in a lot of ours. The fast start was everything. [Texas] A&M hung in there, but our guys battled and responded. We really wanted to represent West Texas in this battle of Texas teams, and we did just that."
Doubles play was once again headed by the No. 17 ranked duo of Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn, who collected their third win of the year in four attempts with a … over their opponents to set the tone early for the Red Raiders. The doubles point was eventually secured by Jackson Cobb and Tommy Mylnikov, who remained undefeated with their fourth win in a row.
Tech continued where they left off in singles play, as No. 70 Bjorn Thomson rattled off the first individual win of the evening with a 6-3, 6-3 decision to give Tech their second match point. The next point was secured by junior Parker Wynn who defeated his foe in straight sets to lead Tech to their third point of the night. The fourth and final point would ultimately be taken by freshman Franco Ribero, who stretched his singles winning streak to four matches, remaining undefeated in his collegiate career.
The Red Raiders will return to the friendly confines of the McLeod Tennis Center on Friday, February 8th, to face No. 3 Mississippi State.
