Men's tennis collects second straight ranked road win in Orlando
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team defeated the No. 33 ranked UCF Golden Knights by a score of 3-2 at the UCF Collegiate Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.
"Our guys competed hard tonight," head coach Brett Masi said. "I think our success in doubles spring boarded us into singles play. Our three tiebreaker wins early on helped us in the long run. I couldn't be more proud of these guys and how they handled adversity and finished strong during these last two matches on the road."
Tech began their bout with the Golden Knights by seizing the early momentum in doubles play, headed by Matheus Leite and Igliz Valiev, who improved to 5-0 on the year with a 6-3 victory on court three. The Red Raiders would pick up the decisive win on court three by a count of 6-4 from Jackson Cobb and Tommy Mylnikov.
Tech has now won four of its last five doubles points, dating back to March 3rd against Iowa.
In singles play, the Red Raiders would fall behind early, as the Golden Knights picked up consecutive singles victories on courts four and five to regain the match advantage by a score of 2-1. However, Tech would bounce back and regain momentum with a win by Valiev at a 7-5(5), 6-2 notch.
Junior Parker Wynn, who is ranked No. 108 in the nation, snagged the third point for the Red Raiders with a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory over No. 122 Rubio of UCF. Freshman Franco Ribero would conclude the match for Tech on court six, as he completed a straight-set win at a 6-4, 7-6(6) mark. Ribero has now secured two match-clinching victories over ranked teams this year.
