Texas Tech men’s tennis advanced to the ASU Spring Break Semifinals
TEMPE, Ariz. – The 33rd-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated Big 10 foe Penn State in the Quarterfinals of the ASU Spring Break Tournament, 4-1 Friday at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
Winners of six straight matches, Texas Tech (11-5) moves on to Saturday's Semifinals against host Arizona State.
Tech got to a strong start Friday in doubles action, winning both matches that were completed.
Dimitrios Azoidis and Reed Collier got things going with a 6-2 victory on doubles court two, before Isaac Arevalo and Piotr Pawlak closed out a 7-5 victory on court one.
Penn State (6-6) won five of six opening sets in singles play, but the Red Raiders battled back to win three of the four singles matches that were completed.
As he has for the majority of the season, Azoidis earned a point on court six, defeating Charl Morgan of Penn State 6-4, 7-6 (1).
Charlotte transfer Olle Wallin overcame an early 3-6 hole to win the final two sets of his day, 7-6/6-2. Wallin won the epic second-set tiebreaker, 9-7. Wallin's victory gave Tech a 3-0 lead.
PSU's Sam Bossem defeated Franco Ribero on court five for the lone point for Penn State, setting the stage for Collier to seal the deal.
After falling 2-6 in the opening set, Collier rebounded for a commanding 6-3 victory in set two. The Texan ultimately sealed the Red Raiders 11th victory of the season by virtue of his 7-1 tiebreaker victory over Miko Eala.
