
Red Raiders on the road for two matches

LUBBOCK, Texas – Following an ITA Kickoff Weekend finals appearance in Fort Worth, the Texas Tech Red Raiders will play two matches in two days as they travel to Oklahoma for a match at Tulsa on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m., then head to Kansas for a contest at Wichita State on Monday, Feb. 6 at 1.
Tech (2-3) recently competed at the Fort Worth Regional for ITA Kickoff Weekend and went 1-1 on the week. The Red Raiders pulled out a gritty, 4-3 victory over Utah on Saturday. In the match, Dimitrios Azoidis and Reed Collier tallied their second ranked victory in doubles when they defeated No. 5 Berk Bugarikj and Patrik Trhac, 7-5.
Taking the doubles point, Tech would claim singles wins at courts four, five and six to win the match. At court six, freshman Lorenzo Esquici clinched his first career match when he came back to beat Mateo Julio, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Franco Ribero and Esquici lead the team with three dual singles victories, while Azoidis, Collier, Piotr Pawlak and Ribero all have three doubles wins.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
Tulsa is 2-2 on the season with losses to Oregon and TCU and wins over Bryant and UCF. Tulsa recently competed in the Ohio State Regional for ITA Kickoff Weekend. They dropped their first contest to the Ducks in a tough 4-3, match. Then, the Golden Hurricanes would come back home with a consolation final win over UCF, 4-1. Tulsa has one ranked doubles team as Adham Gaber and Ezequiel Santalla check in at No. 53. They are currently 2-1 at the three position and 9-7 overall.
The Red Raiders face Wichita State on Monday afternoon. The Shockers (4-3) have collected victories over Grand Canyon, Bryant, Omaha and Washburn, while picking up losses to Illinois, Arizona State and Arkansas. Sophomore Kristof Minarik comes into the match ranked No. 80 in singles as he is 10-5 on the year and 2-1 at the one singles spot. In doubles, Minarik and Alex Richards lead with a 6-5 record and are 3-2 at one doubles.
