No. 41 Tech Falls to No. 4 TCU in Big 12 Finals
April 29, 2017 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders made their second straight appearance in the Big 12 Championship Match.
NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 41 Texas Tech men's tennis team was unable to recreate the magic of its run of three consecutive wins over Top 10 squads over the last week as No. 4 TCU secured a 4-0 decision to claim the 2017 Big 12 Tournament Championship Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center on the University of Oklahoma campus.
Texas Tech (13-15) has made back-to-back appearances in the championship match for the first time in program history under second-year coach Brett Masi.
The Horned Frogs (19-4) tucked away their 14th consecutive victory and validated their regular season championship with a tournament title for the second straight season.
"We didn't get the outcome that we came here to get, and we weren't able to come through today," Masi said. "I told the guys to be proud of their efforts for the last week and for the whole season. This journey started for us back in the fall in September. The guys are gutted right now after falling a little short. We didn't lose the season today. There were parts during the season where we all could have done a little better, and we wouldn't have put ourselves in this position. My message to the group was a thank you to our seniors Carlos and Jolan for all their efforts, dedication and for what they meant to this program. It will be sad to see them go."
TCU started fast and blitzed the Red Raiders in doubles action with convincing wins on courts one and three. No. 33 Jerry Lopez and Reese took down No. 11 Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson by a 6-1 margin followed by a 6-2 decision courtesy of Trevor Johnson and Cameron Norrie against Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya.
When doubles was stopped, No. 49 Guillermo Nunez and Alex Rybakov held a 5-2 lead for the Horned Frogs versus Jolan Cailleau and Carlos DiLaura in the No. 2 spot.
TCU pushed the lead to 3-0 and dropped a combined five games between the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Johnson knocked off DiLaura 6-1, 6-3 coupled with a 6-0, 6-1 from Stalder over Cobb.
The Horned Frogs capped the sweep at the top of the lineup when No. 1 Norrie defeated No. 29 Cailleau 6-1, 6-3.
Sendgeya and Curry held one-set leads for the Red Raiders when the match was clinched, while No. 79 Thomson faced a 6-2, 5-2 hole versus No 20 Rybakov.
"This team should be proud of the fact that they were able to make it to back-to-back finals in a tough conference like the Big 12," Masi said. "We just ran into a better team today in TCU. They were a team that has been playing very confident and on a long winning streak. On our side, the last two seasons have meant a lot with what we've been able to accomplish. Hopefully, the five guys coming back, the three starters that return and the newcomers that we are bringing in can continue to build and keep moving forward."
Texas Tech will await the announcement of the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships field which will take place on Wednesday. The Red Raiders are slated to have No. 29 Cailleau in the 64-player singles draw along with No. 11 Curry and Thomson in the 32-team doubles draw.
