No. 24 Men's Tennis Shuts Out UTPB
January 14, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders earned their second straight shutout win on Sunday.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 24 Texas Tech men's tennis team continued its strong start at home with another 7-0 shutout versus UT Permian Basin on Sunday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (4-1) captured the doubles point for the fourth time in five matches and swept all six matches for the second consecutive match.
"Other than the one doubles set, we didn't drop a set all day," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "I think the guys did a lot better with their sense of urgency and wanted to come out and play hard. I thought we played from ahead instead of worrying about if they can put balls in play and see what happens. We played the way we're supposed to play rather than kind of just seeing how things went."
Texas Tech got rolling as Pyry Hyrkkonen and Matheus Leite blitzed Bob Rice and Daniel Colmenares by a 6-0 margin on court three. Then, Justin Bloss and Jackson Cobb dialed up a 6-2 victory over Jorge Garcia and Marcos Silva at the No. 2 position to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 edge.
UTPB garnered a 6-4 decision courtesy of Raul Stevens and Jordan Minjoot versus Artem Kapshuk and Ilgiz Valiev in the No. 1 slot.
As a team, the Red Raiders won all 12 sets and dropped a combined 18 games over the six singles matches. Leite finished first with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Garcia on court three followed by a 6-2, 6-1 triumph from Kapshuk over Silva at the No. 2 singles line to make it 3-0.
Hyrkkonen provided the match clincher with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Felipe Dias in the No. 5 spot. Valiev claimed his fourth consecutive victory and tallied a 6-2, 6-2 win in his debut on court one, while Cobb notched a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Minjoot at the No. 4 position.
For the second straight match, Bloss closed out the shutout with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Colmenares at the bottom of the lineup.
"It's about just controlling what we can control the best and having a good mindset," Masi said. "We also need to have a good attitude and a good work ethic. We just need to go out and play good tennis like we did this afternoon. UTSA and ACU both have strong teams. If we can control the things that we can control and play the way that we want to play, then I feel comfortable that we're going to be okay tomorrow. If we start relaxing and don't do the same things we did today and play like we did on Friday, then we could find ourselves in some tight matches."
Texas Tech heads into the heart of its seven-match homestand with an indoor doubleheader against UTSA and Abilene Christian on Monday. First serve for the UTSA match is set for 11 a.m. CT at the Falls Athletic Club, while first serve for the ACU match is on-tap for 6 p.m. CT at Lubbock Country Club. Admission is free to all home matches.
