Red Raiders Open San Diego Classic With 4-2 Win

Texas Tech secured its second win of its Spring Break trip to San Diego with a 4-2 win Thursday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech picked up its second win of its weeklong stay in Southern California on Thursday as the No. 37 Red Raiders topped Arizona, 4-2, to open the San Diego Spring Classic at the Lomas Santa Fe Tennis Center.

The Red Raiders collected the doubles point and then cruised to two straight-set wins in singles as well as a three-set rally from Alex Sendegeya to improve to 15-4 already this year. Arizona dropped to 12-8 on the season with the loss.

"Today was a great battle by both teams," Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "I felt like we did an awesome job of keeping our patience and playing in big moments. I was very pleased with our performance and I'm excited for our next challenge tomorrow."

Tech led on all three doubles courts when Artem Kapshuk and Ilgiz Valiev secured the point with a 6-4 victory from the No. 3 position. The Red Raiders also earned a 6-2 win from Jackson Cobb and Sendegeya at the No. 2 spot, while Connor Curry and Tommy Mylnikov were leading 5-4 at the conclusion of the point.

Arizona tied the match twice in singles with wins at courts five and six, but the Red Raiders dominated from there with Valiev and Mylnikov both recording straight-set victories at the No. 4 and No. 1 positions, respectively.

Valiev moved past Jonas Maier, 6-4, 6-0, while Mylnikov fought for a 7-5, 7-5 victory. Tech wrapped the match with Sendegeya rallying from a dropped first set to win, 6-7, 6-0, 6-3.

The Red Raiders move on to face No. 25 Harvard at 4 p.m. CT Friday afternoon. The Crimson topped San Diego State, 4-2, on Thursday evening.
