No. 37 Tech Closes Spring Break With 4-3 Victory
March 17, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Red Raiders picked up wins over the final two singles matches Saturday to secure a 4-3 victory
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 37 Texas Tech put the finishing touches on a successful Spring Break trip to Southern California Saturday afternoon as the Red Raiders won the final two singles matches to edge host and 44th-ranked San Diego, 4-3, at the Hogan Tennis Center.
Â
The victory marked Tech's third in four matches on its west coast swing as the Red Raiders also handed losses to Iowa and Arizona earlier in the week. The Red Raiders are now 16-5 on the season while San Diego dropped to 6-6 overall.
Â
"This was just a gutsy performance by the team today, especially Sandy (Alex Sendegeya) and Tommy (Mylnikov)," Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "We were down the whole singles session, and we just played more aggressive at the end. I'm really happy with our guys fight after the loss yesterday."
Â
Tech breezed through doubles play, securing the opening point with wins on all three courts. Matheus Leite and Tommy Mylnikov opened with a 6-1rout on the No. 3 court, which was followed by a 6-2 victory by Connor Curry and Ilgiz Valiev at the No. 2 position.
Â
San Diego quickly rallied from there, however, winning three of the first four singles matches with Leite being the lone victorious Red Raider early on. Cobb tied the match at 2-2 following a 7-6, 5-3 victory from the No. 6 court.
Â
The match ultimately came down to Mylnikov at the top spot and Sendegeya on the No. 3 court as both needed a third set to secure the victory. Mylnikov won his opening set at 6-3 before falling in a 7-6 tiebreaker shortly after. He captured the win with a 6-3 win in the third and final set.
Â
Sendegeya battled back from a 6-2 loss in the opening set to clinch the match as he downed Joel Gamerov, 7-6, 7-5, over the next two frames. He earned the victory shortly after Mylnikov's win a few courts away.
Â
The Red Raiders will take a full week off before returning to non-conference play March 28 against Northwestern. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center.
