Strong start for the Red Raiders in the fall opener

MIDLAND, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team opened its fall season with a strong performance in both singles and doubles play at the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational.
Senior Tyler Stewart had an impressive singles run, being the only Red Raider to make it to the quarterfinals round of the main draw after he beat Giovanni Lucca Branchetti of Gonzaga, 7-5, 6-2, and then came back to defeat Boise State's Stewart Aronson, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals. His run ended with a three-set loss to Arizona's Mattias Uwe Kask, 6-3, 3-6, 1-6.
Junior Niksa Arsic also started strong, taking down Texas' Evan Burnett in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, before falling to TCU's Duncan Chan, who is ranked No. 106 in the preseason ITA rankings, by a score of 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 16. Sophomore Thiago Guglieri and Sebastian Abboud dropped their opening matches but rebounded in the back draw before unfortunately falling in the quarterfinals. In the first round of the back draw, Guglieri took down Taiyo Kurata (Boise State), 6-3, 6-3, while Abboud defeated Diego Herrera (Gonzaga), 6-7 (5) 6-1, 1-0 (4).
In doubles, the duo Arsic and Guglieri upset Arkansas' No.25-ranked pair of Connor Smillie and Jakub Vrba, 8-6, before falling in the quarterfinals. Stewart and Abboud advanced all the way to the semifinals with wins over SMU, 8-6, and Boise State, 8-4, before losing in a close, 9-8 (4) match to Utah in the semifinals.
Next up, the Red Raiders head to the Waco Fall Kickoff Classic on Sept. 12-14.
