Texas Tech Travels to NCAA West Prelims

39 Athletes will look to earn a spot at the national meet
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Track & Field team heads to the NCAA West Preliminaries this weekend in Sacramento, Calif., with the opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 6-9.

Texas Tech had 48 entries qualify for the regional meet. The three-day meet will start with the men's hammer and women's javelin at 2 p.m. CT on Thursday. The first running events will begin with the men's 400m hurdles at 6:30 p.m. CT.

PRELIM LINEUP
On the men's side, Texas Tech will have 19 student-athletes travel to compete. Of the 23 entries, 17 are currently ranked in the Top 12 among other West Region marks.

Divine Oduduru and Andrew Hudson qualified for the 100m and 200m. The duo went 1-2 in both events at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships. Tyreek Mathis clinched a spot in the men's 400m after running a personal best time of 46.78 at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.

Vincent Crisp and C.J. Jones are set to compete in the 800m. Both times are ranked in the top 10 in the West Region. Darien Tennon earned a spot in the men's 110m and 400m hurdles. He ranks in the top 10 in the sprint hurdles.

Both men's relay squads qualified for the Prelims. The 4x100m relay team of Darien Tennon, Divine Oduduru, Andrew Hudson and Charles Brown broke the school record with a time of 39.01 during the Sun Angel Classic.

The women's team will travel 20 student-athletes to the West Prelims. Thirteen of the women's athletes earned their spots during the Big 12 Outdoor Championships. Kaylee Hinton is one of the Top 24 heptathletes to qualify for the national meet in Eugene and will not compete at the preliminary round.

Sara Limp ran a personal best time of 52.32 in the 400m, jumping to 13th in the region.

The women's team will have four athletes competing in the 100m hurdles and five athletes qualify for the long jump competition.

Senior Paetyn Revell jumped 13.60m (44-7.5) in her final attempt to record a new personal best and win the triple jump at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships. Her mark is fourth in the West Region.

Junior Zarriea Willis cleared 1.86m (6-1.25) in the high jump at the Sun Angel Classic earlier this season, recording the second best mark in the West Region.

BIG 12 CHAMPIONS
The men's track and field teams completed the indoor-outdoor sweep as they captured the 2018 Outdoor Championship title with a record setting 165 points.

Divine Oduduru was named the High Point Scorer of the Meet after winning the 100m, 200m and helped the 4x100m relay team to a first-place finish.
Â
The men's team also claimed a victory on the track in the 800m, with Vincent Crisp taking the top spot. He finished in 1:47.69, less than a second off his best this season. Charles Jones was just behind in third at 1:48.21.

In the 400m hurdles, Norman Grimes hit a new personal best of 49.38 in a victorious performance. His time currently ranks third in the nation. In the field, Eric Kicinski earned a victory in the discus throw, setting a new stadium record of 59.19m.

POSTSEASON ACCOLADES
Following an outstanding 2018 outdoor season, Divine Oduduru and Head Coach Wes Kittley were awarded Big 12 postseason awards, the league office announced Friday.
Â
Oduduru claimed the Male Performer of the Year award after winning the 100m and 200m at the Big 12 Championships and being named the High Point award for scoring the most points at the meet.
Â
Coach Kittley was awarded the Men's Coach of the Year after leaded the Red Raiders to indoor and outdoor Big 12 championships for the first time in program history.
Â
This is the third time a Red Raider has been selected for the honor. Kennedy Kithuka won the award in 2014 and Benard Keter was the 2017 award winner. This marks Kittley's second time to be named male coach of the year. He last won in 2014 when the Red Raiders captured the Big 12 outdoor title.

Athletes who finish in the Top 12 at this weekend's preliminary competition will advance to the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 6-9.
