2021 SEASON (SUPER SENIOR)
Returned the Red Raiders to a bowl game as part of strong final season in scarlet and black … once again ranked among the Big 12’s top defensive backs, especially in coverage … appeared in 12 of 13 games overall, missing only the West Virginia win early in Big 12 play … made 11 starts overall, giving him a team-leading 49 over his Red Raider career … was second on the team for career starts among players who played at more than one university … totaled 50 tackles (41 solo) from his cornerback position, including 4.0 that went for a loss … also recorded a fumble recovery and a team-leading 11 pass breakups … his 41 solo tackles marked the most in his career … matched his career high for passes defended with 11 … credited with at least two tackles in 10 games and five or more tackles five times … broke up at least one pass in nine of his 12 games overall … ranked third on the team after playing in 774 snaps on the season, trailing only fellow corner Rayshad Williams (836) and linebacker Colin Schooler (825), both of whom played in all 13 games … CAREER NUMBERS: ended his Red Raider career with 224 tackles (182 solo), 13.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, four fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and 45 passes defended … ranked second among FBS players at the end of the season for career passes defended … his 45 passes defended marked the most for a Red Raider over his career dating back to 2000 … SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: opened the season with four tackles, a tackle for loss and a pass breakup in the come-from-behind win over Houston (9/4) … followed with a season-high nine stops the next week against Stephen F. 2020 SEAS0N (SENIOR)
Put together another strong season for the Red Raiders in 2020 … among national leaders in passes defended, a category he led in the Big 12 … appeared in eight games overall with six starts at cornerback, giving him 38 now for his career … will enter his final season as a Red Raider in 2021 with the most career starts on the team … closed the 2020 campaign tied with Jack Anderson for the most career starts among active players … totaled 31 tackles (28 solo) on the year, including one that went for a loss, to go along with a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a team-leading 11 pass breakups … ranked third among defensive backs in total tackles … had two or more tackles in five games overall and at least five tackles three times … broke up two or more passes in four different games as well, matching his total from his three previous seasons combined … IN NCAA RANKINGS: closed the season ranked fourth in the FBS for passes defended per game (1.4) … trailed only the totals of Maryland’s Tarheeb Still (2.0), Michigan’s Germon Green and Appalachian State’s Shemar Jean-Charles (1.42) … among that group, only Jean-Charles played in eight or more games (like Fields) on the season … IN BIG 12 RANKINGS: was the Big 12 leader in passes defended per game and also ranked tied for 11th in fumble recoveries … SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: missed the first two games of the season against Houston Baptist (9/12) and Texas (9/26) … made his season debut at Kansas State (10/3), recording one tackle while breaking up a pass … followed with seven tackles and two pass breakups the next week at Iowa State (10/10) … snapped his career high with three pass breakups to go along with five tackles in the win over West Virginia (10/24) … limited to just one tackle the following week against Oklahoma (10/31) … combined for seven tackles the next two games with three at TCU (11/7) and four in the win over Baylor (11/14) … also had a pair of key pass breakups against the Horned Frogs … came close to reaching double digits for tackles for the second time in his career at Oklahoma State (11/28) before finishing with a season-high nine stops and two pass breakups … forced a fumble versus the Cowboys as well, the fourth of his career, while recovering another late in the second quarter ... fumble recovery came on a Colin Schooler strip tackle and helped the Red Raiders cut the deficit to 21-17 with a Jonathan Garibay 44-yard field goal … his forced fumble came on first Oklahoma State play of second half but it was quickly recovered by the Cowboys ... closed the season with a tackle and pass breakup in the win over Kansas (12/5) … AWARDS AND HONORS: honorable mention All-Big 12 selection by the conference coaches … tabbed a fourth team All-Big 12 honoree by Phil Steele Magazine … SENIOR DECISION: elected to return to Texas Tech for one final season of eligibility as granted by the NCAA.
2019 SEASON (JUNIOR)
Appeared in 10 games with nine starts at cornerback as a junior … finished fifth on the team with 54 tackles (46 solo) … led the team with five pass breakups and ranked second with three interceptions, all of which came during Big 12 play … found his way in the backfield as well with 6.0 tackles for a loss, including one solo sack … recorded at least two tackles in all 10 appearances on the season … had five or more tackles in five of those games as well, including the final four contests of the season … led the team with five tackles on special teams, all of which came on kickoff coverage … missed the UTEP (9/7) and Kansas State (11/23) games due to injury ... 2018 SEASON (SOPHOMORE)
Solidified his spot in the secondary, starting in all 12 games at cornerback as a sophomore … racked up 38 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss, to go along with an impressive 11 pass breakups … ranked second on the team in pass breakups, trailing only the 13 from Adrian Frye … shared the team lead with two forced fumbles … recorded three or more tackles in seven games … broke up a pair of passes in three games as well ... 2017 SEASON (REDSHIRT FRESHMAN)
Quickly became a regular in the secondary during redshirt freshman season … played in all 13 games while making 11 starts … was the starter at corner in each of the final 11 games of the year … finished fifth on the team with 51 tackles (38 solo) … contributed to Texas Tech’s turnover count with two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and an interception … was tied for the team high for fumble recoveries and ranked second with seven pass breakups … IN NCAA RANKINGS: finished tied for 26th nationally for fumble recoveries … IN BIG 12 RANKINGS: was tied for the league high in fumble recoveries … also ranked tied for 17th for passes defended … was tied for 12th for passes defended per game in league play (0.78) and 36th in tackles per game (4.8) … SEASON HIGHLIGHTS … saw limited action in the first two games of the season against both Eastern Washington (9/2) and Arizona State (9/16) … recorded first collegiate tackle versus Arizona State … earned first career start at corner against Houston (9/23), recording three tackles to go along with a forced fumble, fumble recovery and a pass breakup in the win … stripped Houston punt return Brand McDowell late in the fourth quarter and held on to the ball to give the Red Raiders possession with just over three minutes remaining … the Houston game marked the first of five-straight weeks with a pass breakup … opened Big 12 play with five tackles and a key interception against Oklahoma State (9/30) … returned his interception 95 yards to the end zone, the second defensive touchdown of his career … his 95-yard interception marked the longest in the Big 12 all season ... pick-six also ranked seventh among players nationally for longest interception return … return was three yards shy of the Texas Tech school record that was set by Ring of Honor member Dave Parks on Nov. 17, 1962 against Colorado … followed with two tackles at Kansas (10/7) and a single takedown at West Virginia (10/14) … set a season high with eight tackles against Iowa State (10/21), which started a four-game span with 28 tackles (7.0 per game) … also had seven tackles at Oklahoma (10/28), five versus Kansas State (11/4) and eight again against Baylor (11/11) … posted a pass breakup against both Kansas State and Baylor as well … closed the regular season with a tackle against TCU (11/18) and six tackles at Texas (11/24) … had four tackles and a fumble recovery in the Birmingham Bowl against USF (12/23) … fumble recovery came on just the second play of USF’s opening drive of the second half … AWARDS AND HONORS … named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Oct. 2 following his interception for a touchdown versus Oklahoma State.
