PERSONAL
- Praised as a key addition to the Texas Tech roster in his lone season as a Red Raider … arrived in Lubbock fresh off a one-year break from college football, becoming Texas Tech’s backup quarterback by the end of the season … appeared in seven games overall, all in a backup role.
- Combined to complete 26-of-36 passes for 357 yards and two touchdowns on the season, while rushing 14 times for 29 yards and another score … completed 72.2 percent of his passes and had a 173.9 efficiency rating thanks to no interceptions.
- Best performance of the year came in relief of Will Hammond versus Oklahoma State (10/25) … replaced the injured Hammond late in the first half to complete 9-of-13 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown … found Caleb Douglas on a 42-yard touchdown strike early in the third quarter for his longest passing play of the season … added a touchdown via his legs as well with a one-yard scamper for Texas Tech’s final points in the 42-0 shutout win.
- Later saw time again against UCF (11/15), completing 13-of-17 passes for 145 yards, while rushing twice for 10 yards … replaced Behren Morton to start the second half and led the Red Raiders to two scoring drives, all while dominating time of possession in the blowout Senior Day win.
- Threw his first touchdown as a Red Raider in the season-opening win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (8/30) … connected with freshman Bryson Jones from 13-yard out for Texas Tech’s final touchdown late in the fourth quarter of its 67-7 rout … finished 2-of-3 for 21 yards in limited action … followed by completing both pass attempts for 19 yards the next week versus Kent State (9/6).
- NCAA TRANSFER PORTAL: entered the transfer portal following the season, eventually signing with East Carolina.
PRIOR TO TEXAS TECH
- Arrived at Texas Tech with starting experience after playing in 23 career games with 10 starts during his four seasons at Wake Forest (2020-23) … made first career start in 2022 before starting all nine games appeared in during the 2023 season ... announced intention to transfer after the 2023 season but stepped away from football the next fall.
- Passed for 1,957 career yards at Wake Forest over four seasons, completing 157-of-263 attempts (59.7 percent) for 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions ... vast majority of his yardage came during his 2023 junior season … able to use his legs to extend plays, rushing 123 times as a Demon Deacon for 141 yards and two touchdowns.
- 2024 SEASON (SENIOR): initially transferred to Marshall with two seasons of eligibility ... opted to step away from football that following June.
- 2023 SEASON (JUNIOR at WAKE FOREST): appeared and started in nine games during the 2023 season for the Demon Deacons ... recognized as a team captain prior to the season … entered the season as a candidate on the Johnny Unites Golden Award watch list.
- Completed 59.9 percent of his passes (124-of-207) for 1,553 yards and nine touchdowns, throwing for at least 300 yards in two different games … made 106 rush attempts for 128 yards with two rushing touchdowns.
- Opened the season by completing 19-of-30 passes for 329 yards and three touchdown passes with only one interception in the win against Elon (8/31) … marked the first 300-yard performance of his career and his first of two such outings on the year … also threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns on 24-of-41 passing two weeks later in the win over Old Dominion (9/16) … best performance rest of the season came in November with 241 passing yards on 16-of-19 passing at Duke (11/2).
- 2022 SEASON (REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE at WAKE FOREST): appeared in six games with one start at quarterback during redshirt sophomore season … finished the season 29-of-41 overall for 348 yards and five touchdowns with only one interception ... made his first career start in the season opener versus VMI (9/1), completing 21-of-29 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns … was the backup to starter Sam Hartman the rest of the season, coming in off the bench to complete touchdown passes against both Army (10/8) and at Louisville (10/29).
- 2021 SEASON (SOPHOMORE at WAKE FOREST): redshirt season … saw action in four games overall against Old Dominion (9/3), the ACC Atlantic Division clincher against Boston College (11/27), the ACC Championship Game against Pitt (12/4) and the Gator Bowl victory over Rutgers (12/31) ... finished the season 0-of-2 on pass attempts.
- 2020 SEASON (FRESHMAN at WAKE FOREST): appeared in four games at quarterback as only a true freshman ... tallied 28 yards through the air on two completions in the Duke's Mayo Bowl versus Wisconsin (12/30) ... threw for 28 yards and a touchdown in collegiate debut against Clemson (9/12).
HIGH SCHOOL
- Attended Broad Run High School in his hometown of Ashburn, Va. … led Spartans to four-year record of 43-7, including consecutive 12-1 records his last two seasons ... won more games as starting QB than any other player in Broad Run history … set every passing and total offense record during his high school career … recognized for his leadership as a team captain.
- Threw for over 3,000 yards and 40 touchdowns as a senior en route to earning All-State honors as well as Region Player of the Year honors … was also an honorable mention All-Met selection as a senior by the Washington Post and a second team honoree as a junior … threw for four touchdowns in a 56-7 win over Urbana ... completed 24 of 34 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns against Tuscarora while also rushing for a touchdown ... threw for 411 yards in a win at Heritage and passed for 367 yards and three touchdowns in a win at Stonebridge.
- Named the 2018 All-Region Offensive Player of the Year and was a second team All-Virginia selection by USA Today ... led the Spartans to a 12-1 record and the conference championship as a junior after completing 188-of-275 passes (68.4 percent) for 2,598 yards and 31 touchdowns.
- As a sophomore, completed 124-of-193 passes (64.2 percent) for 1,636 yards and 14 touchdowns with just four interceptions ... carried 56 times for 414 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
PERSONAL
- Mitchell Griffis ... goes by Mitch ... son of Matt and Robyn Griffis ... has a younger brother, Brett, and an older sister, Libby ... Brett and Mitch both played quarterback together on the 2022 Wake Forest team before both departed via the transfer portal … Brett Griffis transferred to James Madison following the 2022 season.
- Father was the longtime head football coach at Broad Run High School before retiring following the 2021 season … father was able to coach both of his sons at the prep level before retiring after a nearly 30-year coaching career.
- Favorite sport outside of football is baseball, having been a pitcher growing up ... has a Yellow Lab named Virginia.
- Earned a bachelor's degree from Wake Forest in elementary education ... enrolled in post-baccalaureate courses at Texas Tech.
